What would You Do if you have Time Machine?

Well, what would you do?

A lot of people, including me, think of fixing the past. But, will it work well? Fixing the past won’t make you the you today. We are shaped by our past, and that what makes us wise. Fixing past is just an excuse for running away from problem.

What about seeing the future? No, it won’t work as well. Rather than seeing how destiny leads me, I prefer shaping my own destiny. Well, let’s just watch how the story unfolds.

Taken from a small talk with my close friend. He’s a successful person, gaining a lot of champion title, gain fame, colleagues, a lot things. But, for some reason, we had this talk. Both of us are scared that what if our dreams can’t be fulfilled. What are we doing right now? Will we choose a simple, stable job for our future, or choose a life with constant challenge, but fulfilling? What if we fix our past, does it makes us what we are now?

I still strive for that dream. And, No, I don’t need time machine. Because God knows.

Blogwalking: Creative Something

Well, so many blog I’ve stumbled into. This one has piqued my interest.

Creative SomethingThough the name has similarity with several blog I’ve posted, this one’s quite different. Talking how to be creative is not it’s main part. Creative Something is a motivational blog. Recent articles I’ve read talking about be yourself.

“Just do it!” or simply “START!”

Creative Something is written by Tanner Christensen, an entrepreneue from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Creative Something tells that many creativity comes from within. Creativity is depicted with differences, so maybe a lot of people will despise the differences. That’s the main problem. So, just start do it already. Several creation of creative things can be said as creative because they are created.

So, if it isn’t even created, how come one can be said as a creation? If it isn’t even started, how a finish can be achieved? To be creative, you have to start from yourself.

Autopilot

Autopilot: a cognitive state in which you act without self-awareness — Wordnet Thesaurus

It’s a disturbing condition when one trying to do something without one’s will knowing. Just today, I already planned to have a practice in my friend’s place. Unfortunately, my subconscious mind makes me go home. Damn. Well, let’s just say that I have an autopilot program in my brain which drives me home.

What makes autopilot autopilot?

Let’s see from a different perspective: Data Mining Task.

Training data set -> Training/Learning -> Model -> Run Classifier

Training data set is a set of data which is used to train a artificial intelligence. Just call it Machine Learning. When machine got enough data to learn the pattern of data, it makes model, which is the basis to solve problem. In this context: solving problem = classify something. When you provide faulty data set, it will make faulty model, too. So, machine can’t decide to learn which is true and which is false. All it does, it learn to make model to run the classifier. In this faulty system, when you provide the “right” data, it’ll do mistakes. Why? Because the “right” data is not in the model. It’s just noises.

It’s the same with human.

Repetitive actions -> Habit -> Subconscious Will -> Invoke subconscious action

Your repetitive daily actions are the training data set. You learn from your repetitive action and it becomes your habit. When it becomes your habit, it makes a “subroutine” in your brain: subconscious will to do the habit activity. By the time it’s fired, it will invoke it’s most used procedure: the subconscious action.

So, autopilot is made from how human learn, right? Every human has their own autopilot mechanism and it’s shaped by how they interact and do live their life.

Autopilot is so similar with AI. You can’t completely see the whole model (how you think/act), but you can train the whole model to make things right.

Children & Creativity

Have you ever thought what children usually draw? Mountain with a single road? Well, I don’t even know why children usually draw that. Maybe our educational system which hamper their creative way of thinking.

So? How to improve it?

Kelli Cooper gave us several alternative to enhance their creativity here.

We can give them several games which unbind their way of thinking. Take a look at word games, like scramble or connect. Or maybe visual thinking games, show an image and let them tell you their stories. Or maybe drawing games, give them a sheet of paper, have them draw line or circle, and let them fill the rest with whatever they wanted. Don’t forget to give them crayon or colored pencil to make them experience with different color.

First thing first for children: don’t judge what they do, draw, or write. Just praise them for whatever they write/draw. Let their youth filled with fantasy, because the world is colorful in the eyes of children.

Well, if they can play PC games in their school, I would really recommend Scribblenauts, a creative game which tap your vocabulary and creativity to it’s fullest. It’s really a playground for you and your children. Don’t miss it.

Oh right. Don’t forget about Lego. It’s the only plaything where you can make anything from those bricks. Literally, anything :D.Lego City

Niew’s Tale

Niew’s Tale is platformer game abut cat. You will control a male calico (tricolor) cat called Niew. Niew belongs to a kid who lives at a mansion owned by a cat collector. Unbeknownst to its owner, this mansion is always under threat. Who knows, that Niew and all other pets in the world have a duty to stop that incoming threats without anyone notices. Cat has secret, and that what makes Niew’s Tale is.

In Niew’s Tale, you will have an adventure inside a mansion. Explore the mansion. Protect the house from threats. Unleash the barrage of cat’s hunting techniques. Kill every pest in the house. And ultimately, become number one in the house. Niew’s destiny is in your grasp.

Niew’s Tale uses inovative gameplay method: combo creation. Unlike simple hack-and-slash, one must properly time & plan their strategy to achieve best combo at given time. Take a look at these video:

Our Journey

Phase 1 : The Deliverable

We’ve been working on this project since Nov 2012. Back in Sept 2012, it was just the four of us, wandering aimlessly to search for an idea to create a great game. Two months since Sept 2012, suddenly a cat walk in front of us while we ate, then the idea just came out. How about we make game about cat? Since then, it was never be the same. Our group expanded. Each member loves cats, ergo we make Niew’s Tale based on our passion.

For months we’ve spent a lot of time in library to create Niew’s Tale. The path we took was harsh and full of hardship. Game development was not easy, that’s why I make this project as my thesis.

The first deliverable was the game description + gameplay video, March 15. We’ve strived really hard to make both game and video as appealing as possible. By the end of the deadline, we celebrate our efforts by having dinner and birthday celebration for our project manager, Algo.

It’s not over yet. By March, 18, we got a news that we succeed becoming Indonesia Imagine Cup 2013 Semi-finalist in Game Competition. Well, it’s quite a feat, and thankfully, our works was not in vain. We still have to strive for Russia.
